Online Career Development Independent Study with Mentor


The Career Development Department includes a series of new online courses specifically developed with the professional in mind. These courses are perfect for the busy professional that is looking for an in-depth course that can help them train for a new career or advance in their current position.  They are affordable, convenient, and effective so there’s never been an easier way for you to prepare for your future.

These courses offer:

  • Independent study; students set their own pace and have four months to complete their course
  • Open enrollment; students may start whenever they’re ready (and payment is verified)
  • Expert instructor assistance; available to answer any questions by email and telephone
  • Reference textbook; included in the price and mailed directly to the student – an additional resource to expand and re-enforce what they’re learning online
  • Discussion areas for questions and feedback
  • Certificate of Completion awarded with a passing score

The first ten courses available in this new series include:

Principles of Marketing - (45 contact hours) In this course, you'll find out what marketing is really all about. You'll learn how to analyze buyers, markets, and products, and how to determine whether an ad really does its job. By the end, you'll have an insider's understanding of the purpose of marketing and what it takes to develop an effective marketing plan.

Medical Mathematics - (45 contact hours) In this course, you'll gain the math skills you need to be successful in the medical field. We'll start with basic math, delve into various value systems, and take you to the point where you can quickly perform dosage calculations and figure out the cost of medications. By the end, you'll be comfortable with all the mathematical operations that medical personnel must know.

Medical Information Management and Office Practice - (45 contact hours) In this course, you'll learn how to manage the flow of information in a health care setting. We'll cover preparing and keeping medical records, communication in a medical office, and the medical office administrative process. By the time you finish this course, you'll feel confident with records management and medical office administrative procedures.

Math for Business and Finance - (45 contact hours) In this course, you'll gain math skills you can apply to the business world and to managing personal finances. We'll start with basic math; go through the skills needed to evaluate investments and calculate sales and inventory; and end by analyzing key financial reports.

Managerial Accounting - (45 contact hours) This course will introduce you to managerial accounting, the process that uses financial information to organize and govern finances within an organization. It will give you a basis for understanding and analyzing financial statements and prepare you to make effective financial decisions at a managerial level.

Introduction to Business - (45 contact hours) In this course, we'll explore the trends and developments currently impacting and driving business. You'll learn things you need to know these days in order to meet your goals, start your own business, manage work groups, and be an effective team leader and member. You'll gain skills, insights, and knowledge that will help ensure your success and you'll find out about the many business opportunities of today and tomorrow.

Introduction to Biology - (45 contact hours) In this course, you'll learn the basic principles of biology, the science of life. You'll gain an understanding of life's origin and the relationships between all living things. By the end, you'll be able to intelligently discuss the various forms of life and their processes. Get ready for an amazing journey through life on earth!

English Composition - (45 contact hours) In this course, you'll develop a writing process that works for you. You'll learn how to use effective revision strategies on essay drafts; how to write clearly, concisely, and descriptively; how to support a thesis statement; and how to apply rules of grammar, punctuation, and style. By the end, you'll be proficient at writing in a variety of modes and for a variety of audiences.

Introduction to Macroeconomics - (45 contact hours) This course will give you a thorough introduction to the field of macroeconomics. You'll learn how to analyze economy-wide phenomena, including inflation, unemployment, and trade deficits. Having a solid foundation in macroeconomics will help you move forward in your studies and your career.

Confidentiality of Health - (45 contact hours) This course will teach you what you must know in order to manage health care information effectively. We'll cover the American legal system, focusing on the aspects of it that apply specifically to health information. By the time you complete this course, you'll have the skills, insights, and knowledge you need to understand the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and successfully maintain confidential health information.

The fee for each Independent Study course is $189.
