Introduction to Computer Programming in
the "C" Language

This course will teach the student the fundamentals of structures programming using the “C” programming language.  “C” is a higher order language with many of the capabilities normally associated with assembly languages.  The “C” programming language is itself a powerful and useful language and many of today’s applications are written in this language.

Course content will include: structured programming concepts, data types, arithmetic and logical operations, and functions will be taught.  Many fundamental algorithms will be presented to the student with complete explanations.  The successful student will have the capability of using “C” for elementary console applications.

This class will use the Microsoft programming environment. The required textbook for the class is The C Programming Language (Second Edition) by Brian W. Kernighan and Dennis M. Ritchie.  This textbook, ISBN 0131103628, can be found at Amazon.com and has a list price of $40.  The course will have 12 contact hours that combine instruction and instructor-supervised programming lab.  It is expected that most students will not have access to a programming environment outside of class and opportunity will be given to complete programming assignments in the computer lab.

Prerequisite: successful completion of high school algebra
