The Chemistry of Real Stuff Camp
(Ages 9 - 12)
This camp is guaranteed to “make science magic” as it
introduces students to various aspects of chemistry using a hands-on approach
and everyday objects.
Students will explore the structure of atoms and molecules
using 3 dimensional models and use the models to understand how the different
elements interact. They will explore the nature of mixtures, both chemical and
physical, and find ways of separating those mixtures into their components.
Much of the chemistry that goes on around us can be described as acid/base
chemistry and electrochemistry. We will explore both of these types of
reactions using common household solutions and items. Students will learn about
the behavior of natural dye indicators present in many foods. Students will
make a real working battery out of odds and ends found in the home. Being a
good scientist means being able to ask and answer interesting questions; we will
work together to find out why the Mentos experiment works the way it does.
Students are required to dress appropriately for a
chemistry lab. No flip-flops or sandals, closed toe shoes must be worn along
with long pants. Working in a chemistry lab can be messy, so wear appropriate
clothing.
